Boss Engineering was started in 1969 by Oscar, Gary, Wayne, and Bryan Boss by each of them pooling in money and purchasing their first location which is now the site of Elder-Beerman and Dunham's Sporting Goods.

Oscar was Vice President of McAlpine Engineering Company. Wayne was going to college in Detroit full time, Bryan was working for an electrical contractor and attending college. Gary just resigned his position at the Corp of Engineers and started looking for a place to start a business.

Gary had a friend who obtained a report commissioned by Detroit Edison that stated Livingston County was the center of all long term projected growth.

Together they purchased a house with a large chicken-coop and started Boss Engineering.   They bought two used transits for $200 and they had an old Monroe (hand crank) calculator. A local bank gave them all their Mortgage Surveys and almost immediately they had work coming from other sources. They did field work during the day and the computing at night.

They were each putting in 16-18 hours a day and still could not keep up with the demand and had to start hiring more employees. Boss Engineering was incorporated in 1973. Mike and Dan both bought into the company after graduating college. Dan was reluctant to join the family business at first, but they needed someone with his financial education.

Oscar retired from full time work in 1977 and Wayne moved up north. The early 80's brought a recession and Boss Engineering fell on some hard times, but was able to overcome it and learned some important business lessons along the way.

In the late 80's and 1990's, Livingston County saw some major growth. Nationwide chains and developers really started to notice the great possibilities of this area. There was plenty of open land and with the convenience of two major highways running through it, Boss Engineering got a lot of work.

In 1994 and in it's 25th year, Boss Engineering built a new home for itself that would be able to accommodate any future growth. Now with more than 40 employees and a steady stream of work, Boss Engineering decided it was time to look into opportunities outside of Livingston County.

In 1998, that opportunity presented itself in an opening of a second office in Farmington Hills, MI which is in Oakland County.  Both offices continue to bring in work and with relationships that have been made with clients, Boss Engineering will continue to prosper.
